What is sternal notch?

The sternal notch, also known as the jugular notch or incisura jugularis sternalis, is a small indentation at the top of the sternum (breastbone) where it meets the clavicles (collarbones). It is located at the base of the neck and serves as a landmark for anatomical reference and measurement purposes. The sternal notch is commonly used as a reference point for determining the levels of ribs, vertebrae, and other structures in the body. It is also a common site for performing CPR and other medical procedures.
